I used to think I had a brain…..or at least half a brain. I excelled in school, have advanced degrees, and generally like to keep up with current events. But oh, what happened when I became a mommy?
At first I thought it was the sleep deprivation, but I am one of the lucky ones whose daughter was sleeping through the night at 8 weeks (don’t hate me). It’s been 2 and 1/2 years and lots of diaper changes……and I don’t think my “mommy brain” has disappeared. If my husband tells me something, he’s got to follow up with an email or else I just won’t remember. I need it in writing. I need lists, lists, and more lists……and I still don’t remember everything.
It’s not just my memory either. Math. Simple math. I took calculus in high school, yet my brain doesn’t want to calculate.
Am I the only one?
Thank goodness for certain things……..calculators, cute kiddos, and smartphones! Yes, I finally got one last month and am soooo excited about it for so many reasons. I can access almost anything, almost anywhere. That is huge for this mommy. I took it with me to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration last week and was able to have access to email, twitter, my blog, weather updates, my conference schedule, contact info, everything. I can’t imagine not having it…….and oh, how it will help with my “mommy brain”.

You’re definitely not the only one. I have to make notes constantly. Especially at work. My boss can tell me to do something fifteen minutes in advance and if I don’t put it on a sticky note, it doesn’t get done.
Glad you got a smart phone. I want one, just can’t bring myself to pay for the data plan though, hehe.
I have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast.
There are days that I have questioned where my glasses are, only to realize they are right on my face. *sigh* Mommy brain gets all of us. We just need to make sure not to let it stop us. Sorry I did not get to chat with you more at DisneySMMoms. Wish there had been more time to socialize. It was tough to do with family, but still so worth it and magical.
I think I’ve forgotten everything I’ve ever know……..
You are definitely not the only one. I feel like my IQ drops by the day. I’m like you, if I don’t write it down, it will never happen. I have a HUGE calendar on the side of my fridge that I write everything date wise on and a thick notebook to keep up with everyday stuff and odds & ends. If I lose one or the other – I’m screwed. My husband has just about learned that if he wants to know what’s going on, not to ask me (b/c I can’t remember) and to refer to the fridge and my notebook. (hee hee) I think we’ll be alright!
Ohhhhhhh I so feel your distress about the function of one’s brain. I literally lost chunks of my memory following a couple of the 7 surgeries I’ve had. Who knows if I lost more bacause with chunks missing, I could have lost more after other surgeries and never know it. LOL Seems that I am the odd one and some anesthesia drugs really don’t agree with me. Also, being post-menopausal, that doesn’t help either. Everything is foggy feeling.
Brain books don’t work, my huge white board doesn’t work. Sometimes even email reminders don’t work. I have digital sticky notes on my computer and those work marginally. I need ALL of the above, phone calls, emails, lists and on and on. Sad huh?
Just got off phone with my hubs and he says I remember mundane things with ease, birthdays, email addresses but not so much anything else. I got an iPod at Christmas time. I installed some games and downloaded some Kindle books to it. I am trying to play games and read to stimulate retention.
I actually think that blogging is dumming me down. I use that iPod Touch for the calculator, TV Guide, notes (app called Intuition) , and other helpers. Not sure it is working though…

You’re in good company! I guess there are some moms out there who manage to keep it ALL together without lists, reminders, etc. but I don’t know any of them! Maybe it’s all the children’s programming and music we have to listen to or something lol
