***GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED***
Congratulations to:
#66 Tiffany
Gumdrops, Ice Cream Floats, and Peanut Brittle. Oh, how I loved the gameboard of Candyland when I was a little girl, didn’t you? I had recently seen in the stores that Hasbro had created a 3-D version of my old favorite, Candyland Sweet Celebration, so I was anxious to try out it (with snacks nearby of course).
Since the recommended age was for 4yrs and up, I decided that my nephew and I would have a special Family Game Night when I was at his house for our garage sale weekend. Silly me had promised him……forgetting just how exhausted you are at the end of a garage sale. I was sweaty, filthy, and tired, and that sweet boy kept asking when we were going to play.
What’s an aunt to do?
So I got all cleaned up in my pj’s and opened the box. Bright and colorful….just like my old game. There wasn’t a gameboard, so it required a bit of time for set-up. Most pieces have to be punched out which is super easy to do, but does require some time to do the very first time you are going to play.
TIP: Complete set-up ahead of time (not while potentially impatient kiddos are waiting).
Once you punch out all the pieces, create the pawns (characters like King Kandy and Princess Frostine), and assemble the Sweet Stops (places like Snow Flake Lake and SS Neapolitan), it’s time to play.
While equally cute, Candyland Sweet Celebration is totally different from the original. Your goal is to reach Candy Castle with some sweet treats you’ve collected along the way from the Sweet Stops.
Unique Features:
- Strategy - Lord Licorice is a pawn that’s used as a blocker during the game to stop fellow players in their journey(players can move him when collecting a treat). This is why my 2 year old can’t really play yet. Of course, you could certainly not utilize that part of the game for younger kids.
- Control Length of Game – Because this doesn’t have a traditional gameboard, but instead has pieces which link together, you can create the shape of the game (and the length). For a shorter game, use fewer pieces to connect the Sweet Stops. Love this feature as parent…..you can still play with your child and complete a game when you don’t have as much time.
See the Sweet Stop sample? The only thing I didn’t like is that you have to take them apart in order to fit it back in the box. That’s really the only downside….there’s quite a bit to set up initially and then a little bit of set-up each time. While older kids certainly wouldn’t have a problem, 4 year olds might need a little help.
TIP: Since the pieces must link together to form the game, be sure to play this on a hard surface like a coffee table or hard floor.
Overall, Candyland Sweet Celebration was a hit. My nephew keeps asking to play it each time he visits…..it’s become “our” game!
