Fiction Friday: Please Take Me for a Walk by Susan Gal (children’s book)

by A Frugal Friend on July 16, 2010

The most delightful book begins with a puppy staring up at you with wishful puppy dog eyes and leash draped across his body….simply stating, “Please take me for a walk”. Right then I knew my daughter would fall in love. You see, she is crazy for puppies. I mean she loves animals period, but she is CRAZY for puppies. So inevitably, she has a clear favorite on the bookshelf right now with, Please Take Me For a Walk.

Written by Susan Gal and released just this May, this hardcover book contains such a sweet story for young children. The puppy is the speaker during this tale, telling you (his owner) exactly why he needs to go for a walk. You know, puppies need to get out! :-) They need to chase squirrels up the trees, say hello to all the people in the neighborhood like his friend the butcher, and of course catch a ball or two at the park.

With soothing autumn colors and characters wearing scarves, I’m quickly wishing it was fall here in Texas. Our favorite pages are the ones where the puppy meets all kinds of dogs…..I couldn’t even begin to identify all the varieties, but it was fun watching my daughter realize that dogs really do come in all shapes and sizes.  With a sentimental last few lines, I went “aaaaaah, how sweet!”

“Please take me for a walk so everyone can see
……….my best friend and me.”

FUN FACT: The author, Susan Gal, once worked as an “actor with a pencil” for Disney Animation.
