This August I’m thinking ahead. I’m about to watch my nephew enter Kindergarten and my sister is not herself. I wouldn’t be either….that’s why I find myself thinking ahead and counting. How many years do I have left before Kindergarten? How many summers? Oh, it’s all coming too soon. Life really does go by fast as you get older and boy, how I wish I could make it stop sometimes. Anyone relate?
So, in honor of my nephew entering Kindergarten, today’s pick for Fiction Friday is: Kindergarten Cat!
In a cozy green corner
In a kindergarten room,
A kitty cat napped
By the classroom broom.
So begins the lovable new back to school picture book from J. Patrick Lewis. Secret confession: Books like this with adorable kindergarten kiddos in their matching outfits and creative classrooms “almost” make me ready to send my little one off to school. I said “almost”. I always loved school….so this is no surprise. The illustrations by Ailie Busby are inviting and charming…..perfect for the setting of a child’s classroom.
The focus of this story isn’t on any one child though, it’s about a fluffy and floppy cat whom the students call “Tinker Toy”. This cat, who surprises everyone by being quite smart, was “adopted” by the kindergarten class when found outside alone and scared. Tinker Toy becomes the newest member of the class….and definitely the most loved.
This rhyming picture book (my favorite kind) was an instant hit with my 3-year old. Of course, any book with an animal is a “favorite” and it’s bound to be read over and over again in our house!
