New Oceanhouse Media Apps for Children: Dr Seuss, The Berenstain Bears, 5 Little Monkeys and more….

by A Frugal Friend on May 30, 2011

Oceanhouse Media is continually expanding their line of iPhone and iPad Apps for Children. From seasonal picks to children’s classics, many of these Apps are omBooks – Oceanhouse Media Digital Books. That means Apps that encourage children to read!

I love the options that we have when using these Apps from Oceanhouse Media:

  • Read to Me — listen to the narrated story with words highlighted as they are read
  • Read it Myself — read the book in its traditional form
  • Auto Play — plays like a movie, automatically reading and turning pages. Great for younger children!

To promote reading in young children, individual words are highlighted as the story is read and words zoom up when pictures are touched.

One of their latest Apps is Mr. Brown Can Moo Can You, a classic from Dr Seuss himself. Kids of all ages love this book highlighting sounds and words…..a perfect APP to add to your collection.

I wasn’t familiar with the story of 5 Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree, but oh we do laugh while playing this App!

Here’s the Scoop:

The five little monkeys and their mama go down to the river to have supper. While mama takes a nap, the five little monkeys climb a tree and tease Mr. Crocodile! The easliy excitable monkeys taunt him, “Can’t catch me!”, they say. One by one Mr. Crocodile SNAPS at them!

Older kids can practice swiping (turning the pages)……and they’ll appreciate the sound effects too! The crocodile sounds are hilarious!

Who doesn’t love The Berenstain Bears? And some of their classic stories are now available as Apps, including the new The Berenstain Bears Do Their Best.

Here’s the story in a nutshell:

“The Berenstain Bears Do Their Best” is a fun, rhyming tale that tells the story of Papa Bear helping Brother and Sister Bear make their very own kite.

As the story unfolds, the Bear Family enter their homemade kite in a kite flying contest. “Just wait and see, with the special talents that God gave me!” They work hard and do their best, but with all the negative comments they hear from others, will their kite actually fly – let alone win the contest?

This is just one of 16 apps available for The Berenstain Bears….you’ll want to check them out!

For those of you bringing a second or third child into the family, you might want to check out The New Baby.

Here’s the scoop:

As the story unfolds our funny young hero, Little Critter, has to get used to a new baby sister. This is a problem as the baby doesn’t pay attention when he reads to her. She always cries when he makes silly faces and she can’t understand the jokes he tells. It seems like an impossible task, but Little Critter finally figures out what you CAN do with a new baby, and in the process becomes a very good brother!

My 3-year old loves this story! WARNING: The baby cries are incredibly real…..you’ll want to turn the volume down. LOL

This colorful App caught my eye immediately……Elmer’s Special Day.  I wasn’t familiar with Elmer, but we’ve fallen in love with the patchwork elephant!

Here’s the basic story:

It’s almost Elmer’s Day again for the elephants, and they are getting their colorful parade outfits ready. But in their excitement they are making an awful lot of noise and upsetting the other animals. So Elmer changes the rules and invites every single animal in the jungle to join the parade. And they have a special surprise for Elmer too.

You can find all these Apps when you Shop on iTunes!
