2011 Holiday Gift Guide

With many families getting together over the next week or so, I’m betting there will be time for some friendly competition. When I was growing up, we always played games over the holidays……one of our favorites, Taboo!

This year, Taboo has gotten a complete makeover, and I couldn’t be more excited to get the new version. Now to convince my sister and brother-in-law to play on Christmas!! :-) It’s always more fun to play with my sister on MY team…….growing up together, we can usually use shortcuts to get answers quicker!

The 2011 Taboo includes:

  • 270 TABOO cards
  • Cardholder
  • Card Tray
  • Buzzer
  • Game-changer Die
  • Sand Timer
  • Score Pad

The basic concept of Taboo is to get your team to guess a specific word without using the off-limits words!

Example:  You need to get your team to say the word “Dallas”.  BUT, you can’t use the words Cowboys, Rangers, JR Ewing, Ft Worth, or Texas.

I’m making this one up by the way…..it’s fun!  :-)   And there’s a timer, so you rush through the stack of cards (and words) as fast as you can!  Some of you would have a hard time getting your team to say “Dallas”, but I’d just look at my team and say…..”where we live”.  If you personalize it, it’s so much easier.  You could say to your team…..”Where the Super Bowl was played last year”.  You didn’t say Cowboys or Dallas…..so it would be fine.  But if you slip up and say an off-limit word, the other team will be waiting with the buzzer to catch it.  If you are playing with people you don’t know well…..that can be a bit trickier!

Oh, I love Taboo!!  I think you will too.  You might just want to grab one for Christmas or New Years Eve!  If you do, have fun!

SHOP: Available at mass merchandise retailers and of course, Hasbro or Amazon

This summer while at BlogHer in San Diego, I was briefly introduced to Growums Garden Kits for Kids. It’s such a clever product, one that parents (teachers, etc) can use to combine learning and fun both online and off.

The concept is simple……..to teach children how to grow vegetables and herbs from seed to harvest.  As a parent I love that, and know that it will encourage my daughter to eat even more vegetables than she already does.  What parent couldn’t use a little help in that department? :-)   I’ve tried getting my daughter to help prepare foods in order to encourage her to try new things, but this Growums program takes it a step further.

Each Growums Garden Kit comes with everything you need to start growing your own vegetables and herbs.

Kit includes:

  • Package of seeds (varies by kit)
  • Coco pellets
  • Plant tags

For example, the Salad Garden Kit comes with 1 package each of romaine lettuce, carrot, cucumber, and roma tomato seeds; 8 Coco pellets; 8 plant tags (2 per plant); easy to read directions.  Yes, seeds for everything you need to make a salad in the kitchen!

Growums Garden Kits come in many varieties:

  • Taco Garden Kit
  • Herb Garden Kit
  • Salad Garden Kit
  • Ratatouille Garden Kit
  • Pizza Garden Kit
  • Stir Fry Garden Kit

You’ll find seeds for all sorts of veggies and herbs……..from carrots and eggplant to jalepenos!

I received the Ratatouille Garden Kit which contained 1 package each of eggplant, tomato, bell pepper, and zucchini seeds!  I love how it contained veggies that my daughter loves and one she had never tried before, Eggplant.

Growums is more than just a Garden Kit though.  The herbs and vegetables are characters, which make it extra fun for your kids.  There are games too, which I had a bit of fun playing myself, like “So, you think you can grow a garden”! Before you begin your garden, you register online.

As the childrens real gardens grow, so will the Growums virtual world. It’s easy for kids to enter this enchanted land, where their vegetables come to life for both fun and learning

Here’s an example of our friend Eggbert the eggplant. The kids learn that he’s  round, shiny and purple on the outside, and white and spongy inside.  Other facts online show the kids that he’s  full of fiber and other great nutrients that can help you fight certain diseases.

“I may not be the most common vegetable found at home, but if you grow me in the Growums Ratatouille Garden, you’ll see how nifty I am. I’ll bring you star-shaped, lavender flowers with yellow centers – but don’t pick them! Those flowers will turn into delicious eggplants for you to use in ratatouille, eggplant parmesan and other yummy meals!”

It couldn’t be easier to start with the kit (indoors in a shallow dish)…..and while results can vary depending on where you live, the experience is great for kids!

SHOP: You can find Growums Garden Kits on Amazon – $9.99 each!

They’ll arrive by Christmas shipped Free if you order today (Wed by 8pm PST)) w/Amazon Prime Free Trial!

Now for some extra fun for my readers….

Christmas is less than a week away…….Yikes! It always sneaks up on me, no matter how far in advance I’ve started working on my to-do list.

I know some of my last minute shopping always revolves around those people that I find hard to shop for. How about you? Well, T.J.Maxx and Marshall’s have some great advice to help us out this week:

Hard to Buy For…

We all have those people on our Christmas list who are not so easy to shop for. Whether it’s your new co-worker you are still getting to know, your child’s teacher, or the mailman, Marshalls and T.J.Maxx have a great selection of gifts that can take the guess work out of Christmas shopping. We also have enlisted the help of our fashion and shopping experts to give you some tips on how to shop for those hard to buy for people on your list.

The Co-worker:

Fun yet functional supplies for that quirky co-worker. From flowered to animal prints, there is desk accessory that appeals to everyone. Pamela Pekerman, accessory & style expert, stresses that you should never buy anything just because the price is right, buy it because you think it’s fabulous. The beauty of shopping at off-price retailers like T.J.Maxx and Marshalls is that you can get those fabulous name-brand finds at budget-friendly prices. You don’t need to compromise on style!

The Fashionista:

Luxury designer goods to satisfy the fashion lover in your life including handbags, imported scarves, luxurious leather gloves, glam jewelry and more. According to Steven “Cojo” Cojacaru, a Celebrity Insider and Style Maven, states that you can be a red carpet star at any holiday party by wearing over-sized sparkly and dangling statement glamour earrings to add some glitz to your ensemble.

The ones that make it all happen:

Teachers, hairdressers, babysitters, etc. We all have someone in our lives that we truly appreciate, but may not know very well on a personal level. T.J.Maxx and Marshalls carry unique yet appropriate gifts at a price you can afford – from imported soaps and lotions to luxe leather journals, adorable lunch totes and candles. Audrey McClelland says, “I love finding fabulous bold and colorful scarves for my sons’ teachers. I always go with scarves because you never have to worry about getting the sizing wrong and you can really have some fun playing with some colors and textures and fabrics with scarves! I have always had tremendous success with scarves!”

Hostess with the Mostess:

A hostess gift can be the greatest holiday accessory. Thank your host for his/her holiday hospitality with a thoughtful trinket like pottery from Italy or Poland, crystal stemware, quirky kitchen towels or aprons, blown glass vases or a deliciously scented candle. Lilliana Vazquez, founder and editor-in-chief of The Cheap Chica’s Guide to Style, says “Buy gifts that are personal and take some thought…maybe a gift basket with a few small gifts thoughtfully put together rather than one large gift…this can also save you money in the long run and Marshalls and T.J.Maxx are the perfect places to shop for this.

The Unexpected Guest:

Did your little brother bring his roommate home from college? Every family experiences at least one unexpected guest during the holiday season. Don’t be unprepared. Stock up on affordable and appropriate gifts like imported chocolates, gourmet gift baskets and Christmas ornaments so no one feels left out. Style and Shopping expert Alison Deyette also recommends the following: scented candles, solid colored scarves (avoid choosing a pattern!) and specialty coffee, sweet treats, and pictures frames which are gender neutral.

My Shopping: Here are some fun gift baskets I’ve made using items found at my local T.J.Maxx.  I used small, colorful, and unexpected kitchen colanders instead of a traditional gift bag or basket, along with whimsical notecards and lotions.  T.J.Maxx made it so easy to put together….and it was fun thinking outside the box!

There is a better way to Christmas shop! T.J.Maxx and Marshalls receive more than 10,000 new items each week at unbelievable prices – up to 60 percent less than the department stores – right up until Christmas.  I was at T.J. Maxx last night………such great finds (on toys too)!!!

(I have been provided a complimentary gift card as a thank you for posting.)

New Millstone K-Cups: Three options…….full of flavor.

by A Frugal Friend on December 19, 2011

Santa was very good to us last year……he must have heard about the deal I posted about last December, because sure enough, there was a Keurig Brewing System under the tree!

You’ll often find me using my Keurig while blogging!  Anyone else relate?

Did you know that Millstone Coffee Company now has K-Cups for your Keurig Brewer?

Currently there are three flavors:

  • Breakfast Blend Coffee
  • Foglifter® Coffee
  • Hazelnut Cream

You can purchase in either 12, 24, or 48  count boxes.  I’m hoping they’ll have more choices soon…..especially seasonal ones.  Oh, the aroma!  But until then, I’ll have to pick Hazelnut Cream as my favorite.  Flavored coffees are my preference……and they are usually light roasted, which I do like.

Visit Millstone for a great Sweepstakes…….through December 27th. There will be weekly giveaways and a grand prize of $10,000, one Keurig® Single Cup Brewer and a year supply of Millstone coffee K-Cup portion packs! Um, sign me up!

WHERE TO SHOP: You can purchase the new Millstone K-Cups at your local store, Smuckers Online store, and of course Amazon too!

Captain America Hero Mask from Hasbro – The First Avenger!

by A Frugal Friend on December 18, 2011

As I’m typing this, I’m getting a Captain America lecture courtesy of my husband. While I’ve heard the name before, is it terrible that this gal doesn’t really know anything about Captain America? I grew up without any brothers, and I have one child, a girl. :-) So, I’m not up to speed, but I am learning. :-)

Even though I might not know much about the character, I certainly know that boys like to look like their favorite heroes! So, one boy I know will be surprised with the Captain America Hero Mask this Christmas, my nephew. But, let’s just say my 4 yr old daughter and I had fun pretending too. :-)   Then we wrapped!

The mask adjusts to fit head sizes for ages 5 through adult with a velcro band in the back. While a tough plastic on the outside, there is a soft piece that fits against your face on the inside, making it comfortable. I tried it on….yes, it fits me too! :-)

Approx Retail Value: $8.99

Pocoyo SwiggleTraks Review (Deal: Now $19.99) Reg price $30

by A Frugal Friend on December 17, 2011

Pocoyo is quite the hit among preschoolers – and if you haven’t yet spotted Pocoyo and friends, you can check them out on Nick Jr., Univision and PBS.

Pocoyo also just happens to have one of the coolest toys around this holiday season…..it’s already an award winner!

I’m talking about the new Pocoyo Swiggle Traks, created for children ages 18 months an up.  Right from the start, one pretty much knows this toy would be a big hit with young kids because of the tracks.  Doesn’t every kid love a track?  :-)   This isn’t just any ordinary track either.

Here’s the Scoop:

The SwiggleTraks system features colorful, flexible track pieces that are simple to connect and easy to add onto, and comes with a motorized, musical Pocoyo vehicle, as well as a moving bridge that puts the exciting “swiggle” movement in SwiggleTraks.

The first thing I noticed immediately was that there were no instructions within the box.  Not that it’s hard to figure out how to put everything together, but I thought this fairly unusual these days, as everything seems to have at least a simple piece of paper inside.  Since there are many tricks and configurations shown on the box, I’ll probably cut part of the box out to keep (something I wouldn’t have to do if there was a small booklet included).

BUT….the lack of instructions certainly doesn’t take away from the fun of  SwiggleTraks.

Parts included:

  • 4 tracks
  • One moving bridge
  • 1 Pocoyo motorized vehicle with music
  • 1 ball accessory

Batteries are not included.  Motorized vehicle requires 2 AAA batteries and moving bridge requires 3 AA batteries.

As I said earlier, this isn’t your ordinary track.  With the flexible system, the tracks move easily in many directions……just look at what you can create.  Oh, I mean the kids!  :-)   It’s so colorful and it’s certainly set the stage to have SwiggleTraks create additional pieces that you can purchase to make even larger tracks.  I look forward to adding to this.

While SwiggleTraks is good for even young children (ages 18 months and up), personally I think the younger kiddos would have a tough time fitting the track pieces together without the help of an adult or older child.  It requires some strength and coordination fitting them together in the grooves, but it’s definitely great for fine motor skills, something kids need practice with as they grow.

This is a great toy……and I can certainly see why all the buzz and award nominations this year!

SHOP: On sale at Amazon – just $19.99 (Reg $29.99)

Congratulations to: #236 HEather R

I’ve been spotting so many deals to go with the VTech V.Reader Interactive E-Reading System, that I knew I had to get this special holiday giveaway ready ASAP! Yes, huge software deals (you can check out my notes below)!

In the spirit of giving this holiday season, I do want to mention something really special……VTech recently announced they are donating 4,000 new books to start reading programs across the country through First Book, who provides books to parents who can’t afford them.

Love that!

As many of you know, I have a 4 year old daughter who is not in a formal preschool, but stays at home and learns with me. We’ve been working on sight words for the past few months – beginning stages of reading. It’s so cool to actually see the learning taking place.

We’ve been fortunate to have some great tools to encourage reading, one of which is the Vtech V.Reader Interactive E-Reading System. While I will always have a library full of traditional books in the house (I’m a HUGE reader), I’m really seeing the value in using technology to help kids at this age.

According to VTech, 40% of moms with children ages 3 to 7 years old say that they simply do not having enough time to spend reading with their children.  For those kids who can’t yet read, or are in the process of learning, having something they can access (without the assistance of a parent) can help them learn.

Here’s the Scoop:

V.Reader provides the necessary building blocks for kids to grow from a pre-reader into a fluent reader as they learn reading comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, word-building and definitions that are easy to comprehend.

It comes with a 3.5″ color touch screen, and unlike other systems, it has a cover that protects the screen (which I love), and opens and closes easily. It folds completely behind itself too.

It has a touch screen and you can use your fingers or the included stylus.  The stylus isn’t attached, which has it’s pros and cons.  The pros – easier to use for young kids.  The cons…..um, this is likely to get lost at some point.  We most likely will not be traveling with it.  :-)

I do think the unattached stylus is helping her in how she holds a pencil…….that’s been tricky for her. Already loaded on the V.Reader – Writing practice, where you can choose to trace numbers, letters, or even words. This has been a huge help for my daughter as we are learning to make our letters more legible. :-)

The V.Reader comes pre-loaded with the “What’s That Noise” storybook and applications such as a Photo Viewer, Video Player, and Art activities. Additional storybook cartridges (sold separately -see the hot deals below) offer new stories and feature a fully narrated and animated story, reading skill games, and a Story Dictionary.

  • Plays fully animated stories with story narration, character voices, vivid graphics, and exciting sounds and music!
  • Storybook Cartridges have 3 ways to play: Watch the Story, Reading Games, and Story Dictionary
  • USB port and SD memory card slot for expansion
  • Multimedia Capabilities: Photo Viewer, Video Player, Art & Writing Programs
  • You can Download additional e-books and track your child’s progress at VTech’s Learning Lodge Navigator

The V.Reader does not come with any additional software……but gives you tokens to use online in order to download 3 eBooks.  You will want to grab some software if purchasing the V.Reader……fortunately, I’ve spotted some of the lowest prices I’ve ever seen on software this week.  I’m grabbing two of them since we don’t have any cartridges yet.

4AA Batteries will be needed in case you are preparing for Christmas morning.  :-)

Best of all, not only is the V.Reader educational, but it’s fun too.  Our favorite activity just for fun – the coloring pages in the Art program.  We take turns creating!  Yes, Mommy too!

DEALS: Vtech V.Reader Interactive E-Reading System: $44.96 on Amazon

SOFTWARE DEALS: Disney software (Cars, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Disney Princess – Amazon just $7.99/$9.99 (I’ve never seen so low)
