I still remember getting chills when I first saw The Phantom of the Opera at the theatre. There’s nothing like actually experiencing the “Music of the Night” in person. The fact that I shared the experience with my mom makes it that much more special. It’s truly one of my favorite experiences.

I still remember watching a special from the American Film Institute years ago. I was watching the Top 100 Greatest Movie Heroes in Film with my husband. We were newlyweds and as always, we were competitive. As the show began, we picked our Top 5. Then we watched to see just who knew better.

Guess who got #1 correct?  If you guessed my husband, shame on you. Just kidding.

I had guessed Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. My husband didn’t have a clue who that was. I was shocked. Really. Tell me you know who Atticus is?

Today marks the official release of To Kill a Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Edition on Blu-Ray and DVD. It remains one of my favorite films of all time. It’s that powerful.

Have you seen the new Sesame Street DVD, Bye-Bye, Pacifier! – Big Kid Stories with Elmo? It’s a must-have (or must-borrow) for parents of preschoolers.

With this Warner Home Video, our favorite characters like Elmo, Abby Cadabby, and Baby Bear, all work together to deal with tough issues for young kids……..giving up a pacifier, learning to ride a tricycle and the fear of getting a first haircut.

Let’s face it, these issues can be pretty traumatic. In fact, after we watched Baby Bear getting a haircut, my daughter talked about how she almost cried a few months ago when we cut 10 inches off. She had seemed fine to me. This wasn’t exactly her first time, as I always joke that she was born needing a haircut. It made for some good discussion.

The DVD includes 3 episodes:

• Baby Elmo and his pacifier
• Abby learns to ride a bike
• Baby Bear gets a haircut

My daughter has always been a thumb-sucker.  At age 4, we’ve now pretty much limited it to just bedtime, but you know how kids are.  Anytime she gets a bit sleepy or upset, she wants to suck her thumb.  It’s comforting. While the pacifier part of the DVD isn’t exactly on point, it is extremely helpful to have friendly monsters repeating some of the things I say.   Baby Bear’s sister is having a hard time stopping the use of her pacifier, so Elmo talks to her about the different things he tried when he was young.  Most importantly, not to give up.

Sesame Street of course is a great resource and even has online Tips for Parents.

Elmo’s personal message to kids about overcoming the pacifier is a great short video to have your child watch.

We love this DVD and highly recommend it if you have a toddler or preschooler in your life.  Great lessons and loads of fun from Sesame Street…..and I have to admit that our favorite monsters with bicycle helmets on are adorable too!

Let’s face it……..we all get sick.  I’m not just talking about a small case of the sniffles.  I mean really SICK…..coughing, congestion, fever, and sometimes even the dreaded diarrhea or vomiting.

We all get sick.  But somehow, it’s just worse when it’s your child.

As the mom of a 4 year old, I’ve learned a few things:

• Someone will get sick on vacation (and hopefully it won’t be you – because the mom, well, the mom still has to be mom)
• When you travel, always bring cold/flu/cough/anti-diarrhea medicine with you (this avoids the 2 am visit to the nearest drug store when the Gift Shop is closed)
• Christmas can be postponed.  Yes, it’s true.  I’ve made a last minute call to the North Pole and rescheduled a certain special delivery

When it comes to helping my sweet girl feel better, I’ve learned to relax the “rules” a bit:

• It’s okay to watch Elmo or Jake and the Neverland Pirates  at 3am on the couch (giggles allowed)
• Mommy’s bed just feels better when sick….that’s okay
• No need to change out of comfy pj’s (for both Mommy and child)
• A new small toy from Mommy’s stash helps during a fever
• Thumb-sucking can happen (even if she isn’t sleeping – Gasp, I know!)

But nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to snuggling with Mama while sick.  Okay, thumb-sucking might be a close second.   Unfortunately, this means that Mama just might get sick too.  What then?  This Mama then usually wishes she was 4 years old again, snug in the arms of her own Mama.  But reality hits, and I take whatever medicine I can, and do my best ’til Daddy comes home.  Then I’m off to bed. 

Of course, I remember being sick when I was a child. Those were the days of terrible-tasting medicines. That’s even putting it mildly. Icky. Icky. Icky. Thankfully, those days are over.

I remember playing the original Simon game as a child…….and I loved it. Of course, I love memory games, and they are so good for kids and adults alike.

First off, I love that the carrying case is so small.  It doesn’t take much space at all, which is a huge plus in our house.  Simon Flash has a mute option too.  While I do think it’s easier for children to both hear and see the cubes……I love that we have the option of turning off the sound.  That can be especially helpful if we are in a public place (or have a migraine).

Four Games to be Played Include:

1. Simon Classic – correctly repeat a sequence of colors that keeps getting longer
2. Simon Shuffle – Line up the colors in their original order (harder than it sounds)!!!
3. Simon Lights Off – Line up all the cubes so that all the lights turn off.
4. Simon Secret Color – solve the puzzle by placing the cubes in the only possible order for which all 4 will have the same color.

While the recommendation is for ages 8 years and up, I thought I’d try it out with my 4 year old.  It’s limiting at this age of course, but I was surprised at how well she could play the Simon Classic…..memorizing the sequence of colors.  Great tool for even young kids in my opinion.

Are you a breakfast fan? While I’ve been known to skip breakfast ever since I was a kid, I do love breakfast foods. We love enjoying them for dinner too, don’t you?

Have you heard of the Hungry Jack Premium Hashbrown Potatoes?

Made with 100% Idaho^® Potatoes, they are an awesome addition to breakfast, especially during the holidays when we tend to serve larger breakfasts with family and friends.

While typically a breakfast item, I spotted that Hungry Jack recommends trying as a side dish with chicken, cold cuts, sausage, burgers, roast pork or any meat and gravy. They indicate it’s popular with sour cream and applesauce for a light lunch or snack too.  What do you think?

Of course, any day that “Mommy” makes an extra fun breakfast, someone is excited.  We recently did just that and tried out the Hungry Jack Premium Hashbrown Potatoes.

They couldn’t be easier to prepare:

• Add hot water to carton
• Close carton and let stand for 12 minutes, then drain well.
• Pan Fry using non-stick skillet on one side for 3-4 minutes.
• Voila

I added a bit of green onions cut up for extra flavor……and it was a huge hit!  We’ll be keeping a few of these on hand to whip up some great breakfasts with our usual fruit and more.  All this breakfast talk has me craving breakfast for dinner!
